201 Squadron Introduction

Welcome to the 201 (Guernsey's Own) Squadron element of the RAF Kinloss Web Site! No 201 Squadron is one of three front-line Nimrod MR2 Squadrons located at RAF Kinloss. We operate in the maritime reconnaissance role conducting a mix of Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Unit Warfare (ASW) and Search and Rescue (SAR).

My mission, as the Officer Commanding is to provide combat ready Nimrod MR2 crews for employment by RAF Strike Command and the UK's Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ), on operations worldwide. In addition to our routine training activities, our main focus at present is on a number of very different but extremely important joint operations. We have maintained a continuous presence in the Middle East, since Sep 01, under Operation VERITAS/ORACLE - the UK contribution to the War against Terrorism.

The Squadron was also heavily involved in the war against Iraq in the spring of 2003, (under Operation TELIC) and has remained in the region ever since, tasked with maritime surveillance of the Persian Gulf. We also, along with our sister Squadrons, maintain an aircraft and crew at 1 hour's readiness to provide a SAR capability for the whole of the UK and surrounding waters; on average this is called upon about once a week.

Wing Commander Andy Fryer

Officer Commanding 201 (Guernsey's Own) Squadron
